Christ Church Cathedral Nassau Bahamas: How to Visit

As is the case with the majority of Nassau’s historical attractions, the Christ Church Cathedral Bahamas is right in the city center. This makes it easy to visit no matter how long or short your trip to the Bahamas. 

If you’re taking a cruise to Nassau, the cathedral is just a short walk away from the cruise terminal. Depending on how quickly you walk, you should be able to get there in around five to ten minutes. 

While you could walk directly to the Christ Church Cathedral Nassau Bahamas, you’ll want to stop at different attractions along the way. From restaurants and shops to cultural and historical sites, the area has so much to offer.

Travelers hoping to attend a service should visit the church on Sunday. The first service begins at 7:30 a.m., with subsequent services at 9:00 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 6:00 p.m. Certain holidays will also feature service.

Where Is the Christ Church Cathedral Bahamas?

The Christ Church Anglican Cathedral is on George Street. This is one of the many streets branching off of Bay Street, the main Nassau thoroughfare. The church itself is across from the Pirates of Nassau Museum. 

There’s been a religious structure at the current site since the early 1700s. While colonists added various additions to the church throughout the years, the main building came into being in 1841. In 1861, the site officially became a cathedral, and it’s served as a religious center ever since.

The Christ Church Cathedral Bahamas has many elements that make it the perfect stop for those interested in architecture. One of these is the stained glass windows. 

Depicting classic Christian scenes like the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, the windows are gorgeous no matter your faith. At the right time of day, light pours through them, further enhancing their aesthetic value. 

Read the historical plaques

The signs and plaques scattered throughout the Christ Church Cathedral Bahamas highlight many of the difficulties that the early Bahamian people endured. From a child who got lost at sea to colonists who died of plague and other illnesses, there’s a lot to take in. 

While some of the stories featured may be sad, the fact that loved ones memorialized them is moving.

Walk Through the Courtyard
