A fantastic way to enjoy Bahamian Art is at the National Art Gallery, with it’s indoor and outdoor exhibits, all set within the historical Villa Doyle in Nassau old town.
Regardless of whether you consider yourself an art connoisseur, the National Art Gallery Nassau is an attraction you won’t want to miss out on. With an extensive collection and a location in a historic 19th-century home, the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, or NAGB for short, is one of the top Nassau attractions.
The National Art Gallery Nassau is in the historic Villa Doyle.
The National Art Gallery Nassau is easy to visit, particularly for cruise shipgoers, as it’s right in Downtown Nassau.
If you’re arriving on the island by boat, a 10-15 minute walk is all it takes to reach the Art Gallery Nassau Bahamas. Along the way, you’ll pass by many other Nassau Old Town attractions.
The NAGB is open most days of the week.
Travelers staying on other parts of the island (or on nearby Paradise Island) can look into taking a taxi or a local bus. Consider getting to central Nassau and then exploring the many attractions (including the National Art Gallery Nassau) on foot.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Tours are available for larger groups on weekdays before 4 pm.
The National Art Gallery Nassau is one of many attractions in the city center. It’s within walking distance from many other exciting nearby places, such as Graycliff Heritage Village, the Government House, and much more.
While it’s a short walk away from the cruise terminal, the NAGB remains one of the quieter Nassau attractions. Most cruise ship passengers stick around the area near Junkanoo Beach. Because of that, the museum is a great place to enjoy respite from not only the sun, but crowds as well.
The museum’s artwork offers a visual tour of Bahamian history.
The National Art Gallery Nassau provides visitors with a glimpse into the history of the Bahamas. From pieces covering slavery to the Bahamas’ time as a British colony, there’s no better place in Nassau to embark on a visual tour of the country’s past.
The ground floor is home to the permanent exhibits, while the museum’s second floor houses the rotating pieces. From paintings and sculptures to photographs and more, the gallery is small but well-curated.
Murals adorn the exterior of the Nassau Art Gallery.
The exterior of the Nassau Art Gallery is home to several murals and sculptures. These tie the building into its surroundings and offer additional insight into the cultural and historical past and present of the island.
Depending on how long you spend at each exhibit, it should take you a couple of hours to fully explore the interior and exterior of the Art Gallery Nassau Bahamas.
The museum is in a historic structure called Villa Doyle. Originally built in 1966, it was home to the first Chief Justice of the Bahamas after its founding. Recently, some people wanted to demolish the building, but a team of architects rebuilt it and allowed the gallery to open its doors to the public in 1996.
Today, you can appreciate the building’s colonial architecture, bright colors, and excellent views of the island.
