The Queens Staircase Nassau: How to Visit

If you’re looking for a Nassau attraction that’s easy to get to, Queen Staircase is the perfect option. It’s right in Downtown Nassau, meaning you won’t need to spend much time figuring out how to get there.

Travelers touring the Bahamas on a cruise ship will find walking the easiest way to reach the stairs. Once you disembark your boat and are at the cruise terminal, you can expect a walk of around 15 minutes. 

Those staying on New Providence or nearby Paradise Island can still take advantage of the site’s accessibility. If walking isn’t realistic, taking a taxi will be the most straightforward way to reach Queen Staircase Bahamas. Alternatively, you can also look into taking a local bus (called a jitney), but this depends on which hotel you’re staying at. 

The 66 Steps Bahamas: Where Is It? 

As mentioned, Queen Staircase is in Nassau Old Town. You’ll find it at the end of Elizabeth Avenue, which intersects Bay Street, one of the major roads on the island. You can also reach it by heading down East Street. 

The walk up to the staircase is lush and beautiful.

The Queens Staircase Nassau leads to Fort Fincastle. Perched atop Bennet Hill, the highest point on New Providence, the local government constructed the fort to protect the island from pirates and other European powers. The staircase provided easy access both to and from the defensive structure.

Walk up the Stairs 

Slaves carved the 66 Steps Bahamas into solid limestone centuries ago.

A walk up Queen Staircase can be challenging, given that there are 66 steps. However, it’s worth it for what’s at the top. 

Make sure to appreciate your surroundings with each step. The lush foliage at the base of the staircase is beautiful. The canopy it creates also helps keep the temperature around the stairs temperate! 

Explore Fort Fincastle

At the top of Queen Staircase Bahamas is Fort Fincastle. One of three Nassau forts scattered around the island, Fort Fincastle helped keep the island safe during an era when pirates and rival imperial nations prowled around the warm Caribbean waters. 

At the base of the fort, you can find a market selling souvenirs and trinkets to bring back home. 

Fort Fincastle features excellent views of the island and harbor.

Appreciate the Views

Given that it’s the highest point on New Providence, Bennet Hill offers excellent views of Nassau and its harbor. Viewing the island from atop the hill also helps put the different attractions scattered around the island into a geographic perspective.
